20 Energy
So I just noticed there are no skills that cost 20 energy. There are 0, 1, 5, 10, 15, and 25 energy skills, but no profession has a 20 energy skill. Why did Anet skip 20? Does they have something against it?

There was a weird gypsy fortune teller woman in the alpha. When Anet found out about her arcane gifts, Gaile was sent to ask her for the secret to MMO success.
Her answer was: Twen'y, twen'y, skill costs of twen'y, among all the chapters there shall not be any. |

Because it isn't needed.
Skills that are powerful enough to warrant 25 energy as a cost have such a huge increase in power compared to the ones at 15 that only 5 more energy wouldn't be justifiable. |

Mathematically speaking it was discovered that to be truly balanced skill costs need to be square numbers. Unfortunately management found square numbers confusing, so skill costs were rounded to the nearest multiple of 5 in most cases.

1 Energy: Sacrifice skills with token costs that are required for them to act as spells. (Dark Pact, etc.)
5 Energy: Cheap skills, either spammable if the skills is bad, or high recharge if the skill is good. (Stone Daggers, Dark Escape, etc.) 10 Energy: Medium skills, moderately powerful but not spammable. ("Find Their Weakness!", dervish PBAoE enchantments, etc.) 15 Energy: Medium-expensive skills, tend to be pretty powerful with high energy and have low recharge, if not ranger skills. (Animate Bone Minions, Barbed Trap, etc.) 25 Energy: Expensive skills, used rarely and only once per build. These usually cost between 50% and 100% of your energy base to cast, so they have to be very powerful in most cases. (Meteor Shower, etc.) No need for 20-energy skills really. |

It's all in the numbers. It's a Fibonacci sequence
0*5=0 Signet 1*5=5. Now 1. Those were the spells that had 5 energy and sacrificed health. They are no longer multiplied by 5, so they cost just 1. 1*5=5 2*5=10 3*5=15 5*5=25 I hope that answered your question. XD |

I've been wondering this for a while, myself. As I am somewhat math-dyslexic, I think paddymew's explanation is the best.
